Background of the Study
Air pollution has become a major environmental and public health concern globally, contributing to respiratory diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) (WHO, 2024). In Nigeria, urban areas such as Kano State experience high levels of air pollution due to industrial emissions, vehicle exhaust, and burning of biomass fuels (Akinyemi et al., 2024). The World Health Organization (2024) has classified air pollution as a leading environmental risk factor for respiratory diseases, with fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) being the primary pollutants linked to asthma.
Asthma is a chronic respiratory disease that affects millions of people worldwide, with increasing prevalence in Nigeria due to worsening air quality (Olatunji & Musa, 2024). In Kano State, the rise in industrialization and traffic congestion has led to a surge in air pollution levels, disproportionately affecting children and individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions (NCDC, 2024). Studies have shown a strong correlation between exposure to air pollutants and the incidence of asthma attacks, hospital admissions, and decreased lung function (WHO, 2024).
Despite the growing burden of air pollution-related diseases, there is limited research on its impact on asthma prevalence in Kano State. This study seeks to evaluate the relationship between air pollution and asthma prevalence, identify high-risk populations, and recommend policies to mitigate air pollution and improve respiratory health.
Statement of the Problem
The increasing industrial activities and vehicular emissions in Kano State have contributed to a significant rise in air pollution levels (Akinyemi et al., 2024). Concurrently, asthma prevalence has been increasing, with more cases reported in hospitals and clinics (NCDC, 2024). However, there is limited empirical research linking air pollution to asthma prevalence in the state.
Many residents, particularly children and the elderly, experience frequent respiratory symptoms such as wheezing, coughing, and shortness of breath, yet the role of environmental factors is often overlooked (Olatunji & Musa, 2024). Without effective policies to reduce pollution and promote respiratory health, the burden of asthma will continue to rise in Kano State. This study aims to investigate the impact of air pollution on asthma prevalence and propose recommendations for mitigating its effects.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of air pollution in Kano State and its main sources.
2. To examine the relationship between air pollution and asthma prevalence in Kano State.
3. To recommend strategies for reducing air pollution and improving respiratory health.
Research Questions
1. What are the main sources of air pollution in Kano State?
2. How does air pollution affect asthma prevalence in Kano State?
3. What strategies can be implemented to reduce air pollution and mitigate its effects on asthma?
Research Hypotheses
1. High levels of air pollution contribute to increased asthma prevalence in Kano State.
2. Industrial and vehicular emissions are major contributors to air pollution in Kano State.
3. Reducing air pollution will lead to a decline in asthma-related hospital admissions.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on air pollution levels, asthma prevalence, and health records in Kano State. Limitations may include difficulties in obtaining real-time pollution data and potential underreporting of asthma cases in rural areas.

• Air Pollution: The presence of harmful substances in the air that can affect human health (WHO, 2024).
• Asthma: A chronic respiratory disease characterized by airway inflammation and difficulty breathing (NCDC, 2024).
• Particulate Matter (PM2.5): Tiny particles in the air that can penetrate deep into the lungs and cause respiratory issues (Akinyemi et al., 2024).
